KISHAN RANA BILATERAL DIPLOMACY PDF

The first part of the book deals with the purposes of bilateral diplomacy and has some emphasis on commerce, finance and aid. The second deals with institutions: the MFA, embassies and consulates, joint commissions and other groups, and bilateral summits. And the third covers methods: diplomatic reports, cross-cultural sensitivity, diplomatic signalling, negotiating, and performance enhancement. In the long conclusion, the author pulls together the threads of his theme. I have heard it said that her readers would walk bare-foot over broken glass to get their hands on the latest Dorothy Dunnett novel.

Distance learning, delivered through the internet, is highly relevant to the training programs of foreign ministries, given that at any point in time around half their personnel are abroad, dispersed at many locations. The participants include officials at different levels from Indian ministries and from private entities. In November , we also ran this course at Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Research and Writing I am interested in the diplomatic process, the way it works, its evolution, and its institutions, esp. Related to this is the issue of improving the capacity and performance of the diplomatic apparatus in developing and transition states, through improved training and better organization. I also study economic diplomacy and public diplomacy. I helped to organize two conferences of foreign ministries, held at Geneva in May , and at Bangkok in June the latter in cooperation with the Thailand Foreign Ministry.

Another project that is being pursued at DiploFoundation relates to working with small states to improve their diplomacy delivery.

The Commonwealth Secretariat is collaborating with us. I am also engaged in producing some new teaching courses, jointly with other colleagues at Diplo. Finally, I am working on three book projects. Leave A Comment.

Rana, Kishan S. NOTES 1. International relations theory can be divided into several clusters. The safety and independence of the state is its own first responsibility, and moral imperatives are alien to it. This set of theories, in all their variations, is identified with the Greek historian Thucydides, and Machiavelli, the 16th century Italian protagonist of the role of power. State behavior does not respond to the international system, but constitutes it.

Continuum: London and New York, , pp incl. ISBN: Since then he has spent many years as a globe-trotting trainer of junior diplomats on behalf of DiploFoundation. It is also full of interesting facts, for example that Latvia won a prize in for the best foreign ministry website; it is packed with topical examples; and it bursts with ideas. The author also shows that he is right on top of the latest developments in information and communications technology affecting diplomacy. He would, however, be disappointed if I did not choose some aspects of the book on which to hint at reservations.
